ZTT Royalty Frankie Goes To Hollywood + Propaganda Get 40th Anniversary BSOG/Blu-Ray Treatments

The ZTT legacy is borne aloft by the sales and critical sway of FGTH and Propaganda

Sometimes you are on the road when big news drops. I’ve been in the middle of a whirlwind for the last month or two [as if one couldn’t tell from the lack of posting here at PPM], and when news got out about the ZTT big guns of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Propaganda getting the BSOG [and more] treatment, I was caught with my attention elsewhere. But here’s the short form. On October 31st, FGTH are having “Welcome To The Pleasuredome” released in a 7xCD + Blu-Ray edition.

And, yes: Steven Wilson is remixing the album for Blu-Ray. As we’ve discovered, if we want to hear a classic album in a different character to the original iconic production, Steven Wilson is the man to do it. You may prefer the original production and mix but I have never found much fault with his mix. And in some cases I definitely prefer his! The box is filled to bursting so let’s examine what’s in it.

BLU-RAY | STEVEN WILSON VERSION

  1. Welcome To The Pleasuredome Album

BLU-RAY | BONUS TRACKS

That seems as thorough as one could imagine! There are 34 mixes in addition to the classic single format mixes which are duly accounted for in the Record Cell! And of course, such attention to detail comes with a price. The UMG store has this in pre-order for $135.99. The buy in will probably only increase over time in the aftermarket, but 40 years later, I think I’ll stick with what I have already. It’s paid for and not going anywhere [yet]. But if you’ve been jonesing for the ultimate “Pleasuredome” package… on the silver discs, [the last such attempt was vinyl only!] then this has your name in the credit booklet. DJ hit that button!

Then on November 14th, Propaganda’s “A Secret Wish” will get a 6xCD BSOG treatment of their own. Sadly, I looked into this as soon as I got the info on it and seemingly within hours, that sucker seems to be SOLD OUT everywhere on the web! If you can find it for pre-sale, good luck! I will have to console myself with the knowledge that throughout the 21st century, I’ve gotten most of the ZTT raids of the Propaganda tape cabinet that compiler Ian Peel has already curated! Here’s the contents for the sake of argument. Your guess is as good as mine as to what hasn’t been issued prior.

Then our pals at SuperDeluxe Edition are issuing one of their typically thorough Blu-Rays for each album. The Blu-Ray in the FGTH 8-disc box only has the first three of the seven streams here. As usual, SDE have salted the pot with many variants for our many moods.

Super Deluxe Edition | UK | Blu-Ray | SDE 050 | 2025

  • 2025 Steven Wilson Stereo Instrumental Mix
  • 1984 Stereo Mix
  • 6 Bonus tracks in all Atmos, 5.1 and Stereo
  • 6 Bonus tracks as Instrumentals (Atmos, 5.1, Stereo)
  • Welcome to the Pleasure Dome (Supernova) – 30 min Steven Wilson remix

For rabid ZTT collectors, SDE also offers an exclusive foil stamped O-card artwork edition for £4.99 more…

Super Deluxe Edition | UK | Blu-Ray | SDE 050 | 2025

With the Propaganda I was shocked to find that Steven Wilson did not remix it. A new pair of hands and ears to me, David Kostan is responsible for the new mixes. He also held court on the Claudia Brücken “Night Mirror” Blu-Ray which was #40 in the SDE series, but I passed on that one. This one is already pre-ordered! We’ve been wanting a surround mix of “A Secret Wish” ever since we got 5.1 in 2011! The German 20th anniversary CD + DVD on Repertoire was hard to source, and the SACD was, well…an SACD. I never bothered with getting one of those players. With this Blu-Ray a mind expanding ten different streams are provided on the handy disc!

Super Deluxe Edition | UK | Blu-Ray | SDE 051 | 2025

Propaganda: A Secret Wish – UK – Blu-Ray [2025]

  • A Secret Wish 2025 Atmos Mix (48/24)
  • A Secret Wish 2025 5.1 Mix (96/24)
  • A Secret Wish 2025 Stereo Mix (96/24)
  • A Secret Wish 2025 Binaural Mix [headphones-only]
  • A Secret Wish 2025 Atmos Instrumental Mix (48/24)
  • A Secret Wish 2025 5.1 Instrumental Mix (96/24)
  • A Secret Wish 2025 Stereo Mix Instrumental Mix (96/24)
  • A Secret Wish 2025 Binaural Instrumental Mix [headphones-only]
  • A Secret Wish 1985 Stereo Mix – Vinyl Version (96/24)
  • A Secret Wish 1985 Stereo Mix – CD Version (48/24)

Very thorough in that the original 2.0 CD/LP mixes are also included. Each of these SDE Blu-Rays are still in pre-order until Sept 29th, so if you want them act now! They are £25 each, with a bundle option available. Now that The Fathead has started a trade war with the Entire Free World, shipping for these bad boys is likely to be more costly. Because …America is the winner? So I’m only in on the Propaganda disc. Because. After the added Stupidity Tax from The Fathead, I was about $50 out of pocket for the Blu-Ray. If these are calling to you, then DJ hit those buttons!

Wilson talked about Welcome to the Pleasure Dome on his and Tim Bowness’ (currently dormant) podcast The Album Years several months back. I was very surprised that he was such a fan, though I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I imagine every aspiring producer probably studied Trevor Horn’s work like they were studying for a final exam, and that album arguably has Horn’s signature more than the band’s.

I seem to recall Wilson and Bowness also arguing that Liverpool isn’t as bad as people say it is. I’ve never heard a note of it.

It’s interesting and a bit frustrating to see all such projects, items I traditionally would have found appealing, finally coming into existence at a point when I just no longer have the bandwidth for all these differing versions of things. I went for the Split Enz Mental Notes set because it has loomed so large in my history, but there likely won’t be many more such sets that I can’t pass by.

Big Mark – Right-o. At 45 this would have been a no-brainer. At 62, my priorities lay elsewhere. My ZTT collection is sufficient. I would like to have every ZTT single from point zero to “Slave To The Rhythm” and I think I have most of it. Right now I’m downsizing my collection. TO ENJOY IT MORE. About 200 CDs are gone but I want to lose 800 more. The records haven’t happened yet but I hope by the end of the year to have started.

I’ve been selling on Discogs since 2018 or so and have had nearly 1200 sales, and that barely scratches the surface of what I theoretically could live without. The further along I go, the more there is that seems non-essential.

A couple of years ago I bought the Van der Graaf Generator box of the Charisma era, a decision I’m quite happy with. However, I didn’t go for the box of the more recent era, and I’ve decided not to go for the similar forthcoming Peter Hammill box. Not so long ago both would have been must-have items. As you so rightly say, it’s all to enjoy the collection more.

  5. I would love both of these (and the SDE Dare blu-ray) but sadly things are very grim financially at the moment and also I don’t actually have surround sound in my home, so would not as yet fully get the benefit of them.
I have the FGTH and Propaganda double disc sets from a few years ago and the original LPs and CDs so I will continue to enjoy those.

gavinthemetamorph – I bought my first surround sound disc a full six years before I found myself the owner of a Denon 5.1 rig. A good move as the 2005 “New Gold Dream [81, 82, 83,84]” DVD-A was three figures by that time. I never anticipated having surround sound but it is just how things are these days when upgrading a tired 1984 stereo system as we did. We paid $100 for it on Craigslist.

You should get surround in your home as your listening space is undoubtedly larger than ours. Our speakers are not optimally placed but it’s the best than can be done in the small living room area. I rarely listen to my surround discs as I have to sit in the “sweet spot” to get the benefit, but I will say that it transforms watching a movie in your home!

    hi mr monk,

glad you’re able to catch up with these releases.

i mentioned an update on the human league.

so there is also a ‘Dare’ bluray with new mixes..

and now there is also a tears for fears ‘songs from the big chair’ bluray also.

    ====

i don’t care about the tariffs or taxes, so i have ordered:

frankie goes to hollywood boxset + sde bluray

    dare bluray

tears for fears bluray + 2lp

    [not a fan of propaganda].

also the simple minds ‘once upon a time’ 40th is coming also.

i haven’t bought anything major for at least half a year now,

so i don’t mind spending more. also, i’m getting them reshipped

through a friend. so that cuts down on the cost.

negative1ne – Yeah I got the email for “Songs From The Big Chair.” Not much of a TTF fan. I like the first album a lot but am selling off my copy of “Songs From The Big Chair.” By this point I’m super sick of those songs. And they weren’t all that highly enjoyable for me 40 years ago. I did see the “Big Chair” tour in Tampa with friends because “beggars can’t be choosers.” So few UK bands made it to Orlando in those days. The record shopping at Vinyl Fever was much more exciting. I never bought anything further from them except for the “Saturnine + Martial” B-side collection, which was interesting.

I am quite intrigued but I’ve heard all the different things that have come out over the years, and honestly it’s diminishing returns now. Do I need another version of Dr. Mabuse? Like a hole in the head. I won’t be buying these but if the Atmos mixes make it to Apple Music I will certainly check them out!

David Kosten is a rising force in the Atmos world. He recently did Tubular Bells and Thompson Twins Into The Gap. (Possibly more, but those are the ones I’ve listened to). Both are excellent renditions. His comments on the SDE forum show that he’s the real deal – a lifelong music nerd and fan who made good.

That Frankie box is a bit too much for me. However, I see that also on 31st October the Steve Wilson 5.1 mix is being issued with a disc of extras drawn from the big box, at a reasonable price. Now that I’ll go for.

David Simpson – That is good news and a good price, too! $17.99 from the Universal store! Though disc one is the Wilson 2.0 on CD. I like the tripartite method of: original album CD, extended 2xCD, box N xCD. There’s a buy-in for most fans of various stripes with that.

Do either of you have a link for that? I would love to buy the big box but in this economy….meanwhile Paul Sinclair’s site is beating my wallet so I have to triage purchases and say no to that.

I did snag the digital release of the new Nick Drake box (again, triaging due to the economy). I normally have trepidation when the set is so demo heavy and this set is really fantastic! I wish that I had the money to splurge on that box set.
