It was two years ago when the Polydor era of Peter Godwin’s solo career finally reached the downloading and streaming public with the “Dance Emotions” and “Correspondence” releases, even though it seems like only yesterday. At the time, I was happy for fans of Godwin’s music to have a foothold in the new era we’re living in, but as always, I’m pining for the music I’m passionate about to finally reside on the silver disc.
To that end, for the last fourteen years, I’ve made my own 2xCD Peter Godwin collection of this material [and more] to the point where I’ve actually made four different iterations of it; each more complete and deep-diving than the last. “Torch Songs + Heroics” has brought me all the delight that the marketplace had fallen down on delivering. It has been, without a doubt, my favorite of my self-generated CDs for my personal use. As of October 11, 2024, I can finally retire my copy as it will be supplanted by a 2xCD package on Cherry Red‘s Strike Force Entertainment imprint. Let’s examine the package!

12 Images Of Heaven (Razormaid Remix)
13 Torch Songs For The Heroine (Ballad)
14 Cruel Heart (Instrumental)
15 Emotional Disguise (Instrumental)
DISC 2 – Correspondence (1983)
1 Baby’s In The Mountains
2 The Art Of Love
3 Window Shopping
4 Soul To Soul
5 Young Pleasure
6 The Dancer
7 Correspondence
8 Over Twenty-One
9 Soul Of Love
10 The Art Of Love (UK Remix)
11 The Art Of Love (John Luongo New York Dance Mix)
12 The Art Of Love (John Luongo Dub Mix)
13 Baby’s In The Mountains (John Luongo New York Dance Mix)
14 Baby’s In The Mountains (Razormaid Remix)
15 Window Shopping (Remix)
16 The Art Of Love (Remix)
17 The Art Of Love (John Luongo New York Dance Mix DJ Edit)

Since there was no album of the raft of singles Godwin had from ’81-’82, the centerpiece of disc one is the Dutch “Dance Emotions” 6-track EP that had the most tracks as compared to other markets with a 3-4 track EP. The six tracks were supplanted here with all of the requisite mixes, A/B sides and alternate versions. Even the glorious Razormaid mix of “Images Of Heaven” was duly licensed. The one oddity I have on my set that’s not exactly here was the “Emotions Françaises/instrumental” segued mix. Every other market got the two songs separated into “Emotions Françaises” and “Emotional Disguise [instrumental.]” But this is the kind of nit picking detail that only superfans obsess over.
The second disc is the full “Correspondence” album of 1983, fleshed out with all of the “correct” remixes and then some! All of the “Art Of Love” and “Baby’s In The Mountains” 12″ mixes were accounted for. Even both sides of the rare Dutch 7″ of “Window Shopping” with its remixed A-side and the Zeus B. Held mixed B-side of “The Art Of Love” were here! And then this package scoops my best efforts with the so rare I don’t have a copy yet of the Razormaid remix of “Baby’s In The Mountains” and a promo DJ edit of “The Art Of Love [New York Mix]”

The package hits retail on October 11th, 2024 and will be packing a fat 28 page booklet of liner notes by the artiste himself. Anyone who has read the Godwin-penned notes to the 1998 Oglio CD, which has been OOP for ages, will know what a treat they are in for! And the asking price for this most desirable of double discs is an, are-you-sitting-down-? £14.99. Thankfully, because Britain’s Royal Mail hasn’t been quite under the degree of privatization attack that the US Postal Service has been for two decades, the cost of shipping to America is less than half the value of the disc… £6.50! It costs me $25.00 to ship two discs overseas. So anyone reading these words has no excuse for letting this one slip through their fingers! You know the score…DJ hit that button!

At first I mixed him up with Peter Gordon, the Love of Life Orchestra guy who I’ve been curious about for a while. But this reminded me that Godwin was in Metro, whose first album I adore, so color me intrigued.

Michael Toland – Godwin in this era is more Pop with brighter lighting than first album Metro but it’s a glorious Pop indeed. Highly recommend.

Really looking forward to getting this!
Not normally a huge collector of mixes, but from this era they tend to be excellent. John Luongo always delivered.
So great to see Peter’s work available again and on lovely CD too!

Gavin – Having the Collector’s Sickness, my life is not complete without all of those mixes! Peter dodged many aesthetic bullets by not releasing much in the 90s when the art of mixing was at an all time low. There… I said it.

A minor correction regarding “…because Britain’s Royal Mail hasn’t been quite under the degree of privatization attack that the US Postal Service has been for two decades..” Sadly, Royal Mail was privatised in 2013.

If this CD set came with just 32 repeated tracks of the Razormaid mix of “Baby’s In The Mountains,” I’d buy it.
Luckily, it has more stuff!
Though I do slightly resent Strike Force musclin’ in on your territory, O Monk!

chasinvictoria – I’m always.on record as to being 150% in favor of actual labels obsoleting my hobbyist efforts! As enlightened as they are! In that respect I doff my Aztec Energy Done in the direction of the late, lamented Rubellan Remasters!

I must say, Peter’s music is as joyful as the man himself. I’ve only recently befriended him post-pandemic, first via Facebook, then actually met him for dinner last July (2023) while my family was on vacation in France, where he lives now. It just lined up nicely. As with any good conversation — especially about music and film, time just flew! We’re due a follow-up chat this September when I’m back in Europe. I’ve told him that he get a lot of Godwin Love stateside, especially from Post-Punk Monk!
