Electronic Sounds #114 bundle – Foxxy goodness

Last week I got an email form a reader asking if I had heard that “the latest issue of Electronic Sound magazine had a special John Foxx cover story and 7″ in the bundle?” Not yet, anyway! So I high-tailed it to the ES website and immediately bought the bundle. I got my shipping notification last Friday and who knows, with Royal Mail as the point of origin, it could be in my mailbox today! Assuming that our own Post Office, which is under attack by its own administrator, [a parting grenade lobbed into America’s infrastructure from donald trump] can get it to me from that point!

Gloryoski! I still haven’t remembered to read the last issue I bought of ES #111, their Blitz Movement cover story [complete with John Foxx on that 7″ as well] due to it arriving in the hectic period right before our European vacation. It’s on my night stand now, mocking me, but when is there time to read anymore? It wasn’t until today that I received the usual email from Electronic Sounds alerting me to the issue I had bought almost a week ago, so I guess it’s no longer under wraps, hence this post today; hot on the heels of another Ultravox-oriented post immediately prior! Sorry, sometimes you just can’t break these up since ES can sell out quickly.

The latest issue dove into the visual art of electronic music icon Foxx with pages devoted to his visual out put alone. Which was considerable given the man’s training was visual art and he worked as a graphic designer/educator during his [wise] sabbatical form the music industry from ’84-’94. As always, John Foxx has more to offer the world than just a pair of cheekbones and an analog synth.

The white vinyl 7″ of his transitional “Miles Away” non-LP single of 1980 is also included with a remix of the traditional cover by the ES designer. I have noticed that when they release a Foxx single that was previously a single ages ago, they don’t take too many liberties with the design. A sign of respect. The B-side of the disc opted for something very different from the original single. Instead of “A Long Time” [with Compact Records artists Shake Shake] we have “Sunset Rising” from the “Cathedral Oceans” album for something completely different. Just the issue without 7″ is £7.99 but if you’re going to take the UK postage hit to the USA [£10.99] like I do, you’d be crazy not to opt for the bundle with 7″ for only £13.99! If you habitually collect the Foxx records like I do then DJ hit that button!

Meanwhile, I had preordered the DLX edition of the Foxx book, “Electricity + Ghosts,” long enough ago to have forgotten that I did that …until hearing about this issue! This tome gets issued on [checks blog post on the book] June 21st, so that means I should get a shipping notice tomorrow! If you still want a copy of this without your name in it [that ship has sailed, amigo] then hit that [second] button below.

I always think of Miles Away as the “John Numan” track. As much as I know it’s in keeping with, say Slow Motion from Systems of Romance, I think of Numan during the refrains.

If there was a Foxx song I’d like to hear Numan interpret…Mostly because it’s far removed from The Quiet Man and pretty first person reactive.
