Want List: OMD Get ‘Physical’ On “Bauhaus Staircase”

OMD - bauhaus staircase singles bundle
OMD tick all the boxes for “Bauhaus Staircase”

Yesterday we got the email from OMD over a fortnight on from the announcement of their new single “Bauhaus Staircase.” And it was a surprise. While “Bauhaus Staircase” has been available as a DL or streaming event for some time, there would now be physical singles for the track. In the past of their modern era, there have been 7″ singles, 12″ singles, and occasional CD singles, in addition to DL packages, but never all three at one time. Each on to be released on October 13th. Let’s get right to the particulars, shall we?

OMD - bauhaus staircase UK white 12"
100% Records | UK | white 12″ | 2023

OMD: Bauhaus Staircase – UK – white 12″ [2023]

  1. Bauhaus Staircase (12″ Extended Mix)
  2. The Rock Drill
  3. Bauhaus Staircase (Stealing Sheep Remix)
  4. Bauhaus Staircase

The 12″ is the most interesting yet from the band’s second era. We have the usual OMD “Extended Version” which is their old-school method of holding the song to its roots, along with a presumably more radical remix from Stealing Sheep…whoever they are. Along with a non-LP B-side with the intriguing title of “The Rock Drill.” Is that drill for minerals or a description of an entertainment process? Or is it [insert stinger] possibly both? We can’t wait to find out the answer. Price from the band’s UK webstore is £15.00 with only 1000 copies pressed.

OMD - bauhaus staircase UK white 7"
100% Records | UK | white 7″ | 2023

OMD: Bauhaus Staircase – UK – white 7″ [2023]

  1. Bauhaus Staircase
  2. Don’t Go

The seven inch single is still white, but quite different. The B-side here was the 40th single from the band on their “Souvenir” compilation [which I never got…] and it had never gotten issued on a single in any physical format, so they decided to put it here. Thorough. A £10.00 note will net you this one and there’s also 1000 copies pressed.

OMD - bauhaus staircase UK CD5
100% Records | UK | CD5 | 2023

OMD: Bauhaus Staircase – UK – CD5 [2023]

  1. Bauhaus Staircase (Album Version)
  2. Don’t Go (Album Version)
  3. The Rock Drill
  4. Bauhaus Staircase (Extended Mix)
  5. Bauhaus Staircase (Stealing Sheep Remix)

And be still my beating heart, the band have also made the holy CD single with five… count ’em, five tracks! Old fans who you can slice in half and count the rings [raises hand] will remember the 90s when single formats in the UK were limited to just four tracks so we count this as progress in more ways than one. We get all of the contents from the 12″ single as well as the album re-recording of “Don’t Go” for some, possibly mysterious reason. Limited to 1500 copies this time for £8.00.

There is also a all-in bundle for überfans. I’ve been typically buying all physical formats of OMD singles in their third phase era, but right now is not a good time with me selling off my collection to fund a Eurotrip next year. So I won’t be buying the £30.00 bundle of all three which is limited in number [they’re not saying how many] but still available as of this writing. Not that I don’t want to. In fact, just this morning, I had all three in a shopping cart, but the shipping from the UK was a deal-slayer. As it was, the $24.00 after shipping for the CD single alone was all I could commit to this time. But your mileage may vary, so DJ hit that button if you are also into physical OMD singles. The band are still warming the cockles of my heart in a great way so I’m riding this train until it hits the station walls.

I bought the uber bundle with the CD and the single CD – I will probably also buy the 5 song CD – these guys are going to clean up money-wise from me…..now to await their tour info in the UK next spring – I’m blocking off several weeks to follow them around in their ‘natural’ nabitat.

Break – I’ve cut my Italian trip short to head back to Leeds to see New Order on 7 Oct – bought expensive VIP standing tix. Have you seen how many of our bands are planning tours (Eurhythmics!)? Also, although I’m not a big FB fan, when I’ve gone there I’ve seen an announcement for a Vince Clark new music instrumentals CD that will be released….yowza. I think they realize they have a fan base who has some money and are willing to spend it to try and be ‘young’ again.

Deserat – You’re kidding me… Eurythmics??’ I might want to see them. I had tickets once but the tour was canceled! But I really don’t have the money to see any other band than The Nits for the next two years!

Just got my stuff – was missing the keychain…and I have ten gig tickets for next spring in Germany and the UK. I was in Jordan when they released Bauhas and downloaded the digital version; I love the song “Tomorrow is Today” which is *not* on any of the physical media…go figure. I have to say it is an amazing album…truly great quality across the board. Oh, I also went to see Andy at the Tim Burgess Listening Party in Soho about ‘Architecture and Morality’ – that was a very interesting experience. It should be up on podcast by now….had a great time meeting some insiders. I am amazed at how much I have seen/done in the last year for concerts over here…much cheaper and easier to access for sure. I also will be seeing ABC for their “Lexicon of Love” presentation in London next Feb. Alas, this will be ending soon as I move back to the USA next April.

Deserat – You tempt me with the DL version having exclusive music, but I cannot find it for sale anywhere! I see the DLX DL version also includes “Silver Cloud,” a La Düsseldorf cover! Yet the Discogs entry for the 29 track DLX DL version tells me that “Only available between Oct 28th 2023 and Nov 2nd 2023 midnight (UK time), on the OMD webstore.” Visits to the OMD webstores [both of them] reveal no DL version of the album at all. Help!

Ahh – they offered it through the 100% store if you were a subscriber as an OMD fan….don’t know if it was offered elsewhere…it was cheap, too – $6.37…(5 pounds) – has the regular album line-up, that song I like the best that is not on the physical media and all of the instrumentals/demos for the album *awesome* – they really should release all of it somehow. However, I do notice they are piece-mealing out the different packages – I remember reading how after they got back from their last OMD tour in 89 they were 1M pounds in the hole…they certainly are making up for that now…too bad it took so long for them to get this…they truly are a great band who has gotten better and held themselves to a very high standard both product-wise and performance-wise over the 40+ years…just amazing to me. Usually when one bought an album there were one or two (or three or more!) duds – I can’t find one on their last two albums at all….you might want to write 100% records to see if they will offer that digital download – I’m sure they might oblige – they are quite nice. I met Ed, the owner/lead at the Listening Party in London – he’s their main distributor, so he makes sure they (OMD) do get their $$$$$$….a belated happy Thanksgiving to you and yours :-)

I read that Dave Stewart will be touring, but not Eurythmics, as Annie Lennox has retired from touring. She has given Dave her blessing to play all the hits! Who will be singing?

secretrivals – I find that it hardly matters as I will not be in attendance without Ms. Lennox. As blasé as I am on her solo career, I would have paid hard-earned money to hear her sing the songs that made her fortune. Well, except for those from “By Yourself Tonight!” I could throw that album into the wood chipper, saving only “It’s Alright [Baby’s Coming Back].” Anyway, the time to see Eurythmics was ’81-’82 before the bomb hit.

Stealing Sheep are a 3 person outfit from somewhere in the UK hinterlands- they made the Best Video of All Time (“Apparition” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFWGrNR_mog&pp=ygUZc3RlYWxpbmcgc2hlZXAgYXBwYXJpdGlvbg%3D%3D) and general are electronic in nature and uber under ground. Also check out their cover of Blister in the Sun.

Soft Cell just announced forthcoming physical formats (CDS & 12″) for their latest single ‘Nostalgia Machine’ coming after originally mentioning it as digital only. So hey. You bought it digital now pay postage. (And indeed it’s not funny when you pay for transportation / handling / taxes as much or more as for the item itself.)

I missed out on the first edition CD and the shipping on 2CD from the UK is $21. Damn! I wonder why they don’t offer the 2CD in the US shop?

On ‘The Rock Drill’ – given Andy’s interest in art and particularly the Vorticist movement (already referenced on e.g. La Mitrailleuse’ from the last album) – I’d hazard a guess that it’s likely related to the the work of the same name by the artist Jacob Epstein. Good to see physical formats for the ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ single, perhaps the first of a few from the album. Dialling back a decade, Visage really worked the physical single releases well with the series from ‘Hearts and Knives’, including some great remixes – it was actually exciting anticipating those releases and a delight to receive them on release. The fly in the ointment is of course the excessive postage fees if ordering from overseas.

versioncrazy – Yes, the Visage “Hearts + Knives” campaign was certainly a gold standard!! I’m shocked that a 10th anniversary DLX boxed set of that album hasn’t manifested! All on colored vinyl for £150.00! But also grateful that it happened a decade ago when I could afford the postage easily!

Any thoughts on the second disc of the LP with demos? Is it worth pursuing on the second hand market? Thanks.
