Destination Düsseldorf II: Electri_City ’24 Conference Celebrates A Decade Exploring Music + Art

This year’s conference see it as a nexus of Monastic interests

Just two days later and we’re looking back to Düsseldorf again! A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend who was telling me about this year’s Electri_City Conference in Düsseldorf and how he was wanting to make the flight happen to attend later this year; no matter the cost. I had written about the first Electri_City event in 2015, and betchabygollywow, it’s been ten years without the subsequent events tripping my radar! The event takes it’s name from Rudiger [Die Krupps] Esch’s book of the same name and he’s tirelessly been chairing these events and the one this year is a potent nexus of Monastic obsessions!

I was discussing with the same friend all of the panel discussions I’ve seen in the last 20 years and how as I age, these are particularly interesting to me. If any of you reading this haven’t seen your favorite musicians giving a talk on their art, then I highly recommend the experience.

Andy McCluskey will be hosting a panel on the influence of Düsseldorf on his music and art with the city looming large in OMD’s development.

John Foxx and Jonathan Barnbrook will be giving a panel on their just released “Electricity + Ghosts” monograph of Foxx’s art and design work throughout his life and career. Foxx will also be discussing the influence of German producers like Zeus B. Held and the legendary Conny Plank on his musical development. Barnbrook will also be holding court on his crucial Bowie design that pre-dated his long run as Foxx’s designer.

The legendary photographer Sheila Rock, will be hosting a panel on her new book, “New Romantics: From Billy’s To The People’s Palace” which was published late last year [and I’m just hearing about it!]. Her coverage of the New Romantic Scene is legendary and this book should find a berth on my Record Cell; and soon.

Gareth Jones first came to prominence by engineering the electrifying John Foxx solo career, beginning with “Metamatic,” and from there he caught the interest of Depeche Mode as Berlin beckoned. He worked at Hansa Studios for a decade and undoubtedly has hours of stories to tell.

Gloria is a Northern Soul legend; having stint at Motown as well as having first recorded the Soft Cell megahit “Tainted Love.” On top of her own music, she was also the partner of Marc Bolan and oversees his

Egan’s is perhaps the most famous early DJ whose taste actually spawned the New Romantic scene in addition to his drumming in Rich Kids, Skids, and Visage. He will be giving one of his DJ sets so it’s not all talk in Düsseldorf.

Performing live are the duo Cult With No Name. Taking their name from an early branding of the New Romantics before the name got stuck in the more familiar mode.

The Electri_City website has no ticketing information so your guess is as good as mine, but I’m guessing that the airline tickets over to Germany will be the primary cost for most people reading this. The event happens on October 25th and 26th, 2024 this year and hopefully someone out there reading will attend and report back with their findings.

Gavin – I thought that there were many “Quiet Men?” I’ve barely cracked “Electricity + Ghosts” but I’ve seen that much. Congrats for getting the deluxe edition after all! I saw The Metamorph rubbing typographic shoulders with Stephin Merritt in the sponsorship endpapers!

Oh I didnt realise there were more Quiet Men!
I just got the regular edition of E&G,but it was still paid for in advance so I guess it all counts.

Gavin – Oh, that’s right! It’s not the edition per se, but the responsiveness in the pre-order! Sometimes the QM is Foxxy himself…others whoever’s adjacent if he wants to frame the shot.

I didn’t know that! Would be great to see the pics, have only seen them live once, supporting And Also the Trees. Ironically have just received an email update from them announcing their 12th (!) album…

Steve from Fiat Lux is a big fan of Cult With No Name… he said recently that he wants the two bands to do some gigs together. He’s a big fan of their song ‘Over and out of here’
