Well, we knew that there would be a Lament” ultrabox sooner or later after the implications of the RSD Steven Wilson remix EP that managed to drop my jaw on the floor as I went from “will I buy it?” to “can’t wait” status. At least the wait wasn’t too long as it’s still June and the details have dropped on the expansive package. The typical format has been followed as all the boxes have had similar scope, but this sets the bar even higher and adds new concepts to the mix.
Here’s the quick rundown of all eight discs for those who also can’t wait:
- 1984 analog master
- Steven Wilson 2.0 remix
- Extended Re-Mix Album
- Single Mixes/B-Sides/Rarities
- 1984 12″ Re-Mixes
- Set Movements @ Hammersmith [pt. 1]
- Set Movements @ Hammersmith [pt. 2]
- 5.1 Steven Wilson DVD mix
As usual, there is a clear vinyl LP box and a CD/DVD box. We, of course, will opt for the CDs. But stay tuned for the wildcard in the mix to be discussed below the fold. First the CD rundown; not previously released in red.

Yow! There’s some real nice surprises included in the mix. I’m pleased to see that the US 12″ mixes are spoken for as well as the final dose of imperial Ultravox: the “Love’s Great Adventure” single tracks! And coughing up the “Rivets” soundtrack for the famous Levi’s Ad that the band soundtracked, as well as the unused takes of “Threads” which the band recalled from Levi’s after tiring of the ad agency nonsense, and turned into “Love’s Great Adventure” instead show crisp attention to trainspotting levels of Ultravoxian detail! [applause] There’s also the bigger disc format for those who like the eye candy.

![ultravox steven wilson lament remixes](https://postpunkmonk.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/ultavox-lament-6.jpg?w=640)
It seems that the B-sides, single mixes, original remixes, and work-in-progress mixes are cut from the LP version for reasons of space. A good call since hardcore ‘Vox fans should already have those tracks on wax in their own private Record Cells. Finally, we now fully comprehend the mysterious #6 on the thermographic sleeve on the RSD Wilson remix album. I wonder if they left enough room in the box to add that disc for fans who buy both? Somebody out there please report back with your findings.
LAMENT: THE DOLBY ATMOS® BLU-RAY
Those busy beavers at SuperDeluxe Edition must be on the same drugs as Steve Wilson since their series of DLX Blu-Ray Dolby Atmos® show no signs of stopping. Their catalog is so tempting, that even I occasionally buy their wares – and I do must of my listening in the car. But when they issue Ultravox, I pay attention. Here’s the skinny on this mind-melting ninth disc of “Lament” [available separately].

Nice to see that the stunning Wilson Re-Mix of “Man Of Two Worlds” is finally available in digital hi-res!
So now we get down to the particulars. The boxes [5000 copies of the CD and 2500 of the LP, worldwide] also come with extensive 20 page liner note booklets and a reproduction of the 1984 “Set Movements” tour book, like each of the other boxes have featured. All of these packages ship on September 6th, 2024. So you’ve got about ten weeks to save your shekels and pre-order. The official store has the LP and CD boxes at $95.00, with a 180g 2xLP of the straight album [we have enough copies already] for $38.00. If $95. seems higher than the last box, remember that there is an additional disc in this box that has new mixes commissioned from Steven Wilson, Moby, and Blank + Jones. Having already heard the new Wilson mixes, I cannot wait to hear the whole enchilada.
The SDE Blu-Ray is currently in presale for £25.00 from their UK store, and they have bundles with the Chrysalis boxes so you can do one-stop shopping in the UK/EU. Thoughtful! And their bundle prices are discounted as follows:
- CD Box + Blu-Ray – £90.00
- LP Box + Blu-Ray – £90.00
- CD Box – £75.00
- LP box – £75.00
The presale window for the “Lament” Dolby Atmos® Blu-Ray runs from June 27, 2024 until July 6, 2024, so if you want one, don’t dawdle.
For American fans, the $95 + shipping from the UK webstore may be costly, but there are options out there. ImportCDs.com have the CD box at a thrifty $82.63 with dirt cheap $3.99 shipping. There may be other deals out there if you want to dig. I am needing to flip some of my collection to fund this gem asap. As for the rest of you, DJs hit those buttons!

Tim – I noticed that they have to close with “All Stood Still” to blow out any remaining cobwebs. Love those live albums every box has!

The graphic presentation of that box just screams 1980s and I am totally here for it. I am nerding out for this release more than I thought I would.

Tim – It goes without saying that the boxes all sport the same Peter Saville Associates thermographic design as the limited edition ‘84 UK LP. Matte black card with gloss black thermographic printing on it. Technically a 1-color press job [though there is the ink curing process in there, too]!

negative1ne – I’m not even the biggest fan of this album and I’m excited. Blame the Wilson RSD Re-Mix LP!

Like you Monk, this isn’t my favourite album, although I really enjoyed it at the time.
Not enough of Billie’s arp solos for me and I’m missing the other analogue synths too.
For me a certain atmosphere that was on the earlier albums was missing with this album.
Of course I’ve ordered the box set nevertheless. I’ll be interested to hear Steven Wilson’s mix of the album for sure.
Will we get a box set of Uvox though? If one is released I wish it would contain some of the ideas that Warren, Billy and Chris were working on before Midge jettisoned them.

AndyB – It’s really a half step to the Midge Ure solo career. I can’t taste any Warren Cann in the mix. But I did feel that the Wilson 12” are-Mixes really reclaimed the four songs back into Ultravox turf. Adding the mystery that was no longer there.

I agree that the new Steven Wilson extended mixes are excellent, Monk.
I’ve just realised that the work in progress mixes of ‘A Friend I Call Desire’ and ‘Lament’ that were on the 2009 reissue are not included on this box set. Shame there was no room for them.

AndyB – Fascinating, captain! Nice to know that. I can’t view my Ultravox collection as anything beyond SU in the alphabet is off rack, and in inaccessible boxes in my Record Cell. I need to liquidate a third of my CD collection… still!
