Scuttlebutt has it that on August 9th, Verizon and Google will announce an agreement that wreaks havoc with the concept of net neutrality. Should that transpire, I will cease using any Google technologies and this blog will be removed. Apologies to all for any inconvenience!
In the meantime, read all about it here, courtesy of Robert X. Cringely.
Any why not sign this petition as a preemptory measure, courtesy of MoveOn.org?
Here’s the text of the message I sent to Brin, Page & Schmidt:
I’ve been following with dismay the events that will allegedly be laid open for scrutiny on Monday, August 9th. I’ve used Google products and services since day one, But I’ve already warned readers of my (Google) blog that I will cease using Google products and services if the alleged agreement between Google and Verizon comes to pass. If that happens, then Google will join Rupert Murdoch businesses like “MySpace” on my blacklist of pages that will never load on my computer. Moreover, I will urge my friends in IT not to use Google products or services in any way. Businesses working towards my personal detriment can hardly expect my willing supplication.
If Google is actively working to screw the US citizens who have benefitted from an open internet, then I’ll be damned if I’ll be part of their business plan! If I have to use WordPress and buy hosting, then that’s what I’ll do.
