When I was at the Cherry Red HQ to get the lowdown on the Bill Nelson box we posted about yesterday, how could I have not posted hot on its heels about this fabbo new Bruce Woolley boxed set devoted to the one album that he released for CBS in the late 70s. As there were but a handful of singles and the usual US version gambits of the time period, the three disc set digs deeply into demos and features a plethora of unreleased material.
Here’s the last sentence of the review I wrote for the 2009 single CD edition that Cherry Red released earlier when I reviewed it in 2015:
“One hopes that Cherry Red might eventually issue the “Shadows” album that sits in a tape box somewhere. On the evidence of these bonus tracks, it could be a corker.”
Post-Punk Monk
As an exultant Bruce Woolley proclaims on his website, after resolving his disputes with CBS records which were longstanding at 43 years, the artiste had now obtained the rights to the “Shadows” album, which is featured, with adjacent material, on the second disc in this set! That’s rerason right there to buy this even if you have the 2009 edition, yes?
Additionally, the third disc consists of two concerts from the UK and USA on Woolley’s tours of the time. As we can see, he was confident that the second album would eventually get a release owing to the appearance of the [then unreleased] material in the set lists of the 1980 tour. <flash forward 43 years> So what are the tracks included? Bonus tracks in red, with previously unreleased material in bold.

Mark – I didn’t realize The Killers were a different act, so to speak! That record was news to me until you pointed it out!

Dammit Monk! Stop telling me about all these great reissues! I’ve ordered this and the Bill Nelson from yesterday. I clearly have more dollars than sense.

jsd – That makes one of us! But if I had a music budget, I’d be tempted by the disc two on the Woolley set!

I went back and relistened to the Steven Tayler stereo remix of Red Noise and it was really quite the revelation. The box set was also very nicely assembled. I’m excited to see what he can do with Quit Dreaming.

ORDERED. I love it/hate it when a Box Set O’God (™ The Post-Punk Monk) comes from someone like Cherry Red.
LOVE IT because you know it will be thorough and high-quality.
HATE IT because the exchange rate + shipping to me are exhorbitant.
At least it will hit my card in November and not now!
