This morning I got an email from The Countess Of Fife, reminding me that her band is playing a pair of festivals this summer, with the first of them set for this Saturday, August 3, 2024:

But the second festival appearance on their dance card was the mighty Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I had known that The Countess was attending, as well as The Heathen Apostles, another band I’ve written about recently. That got me thinking, what other bands that I enjoy might be reaching eyeballs in the world’s largest arts festival? Well, the truth of the matter was that, boy howdy, out of the 396 music performances over the entire month of the festival, an overwhelmingly large proportion of them were the dreaded tribute acts! [Monk spits on ground]
Multiple Adele, Sting, ABBA®, and various Beatle members were over-represented in the sad mix, so in the hopes of saving the braincells of any readers who find themselves at the Fringe and want to avoid the pox of tribute acts, I’ve done all the legwork for you below the fold.
THE HEATHEN APOSTLES | EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL – Aug. 5,6,7
The Heathen Apostles are having a run at the Festival with three shows over three days! Taking their Dark Country vibe to one of the mother nations of Country Music itself. Hit that button for ticket information.

THE COUNTESS OF FIFE | EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL – Aug. 14
It looks like young Ms. Adamson is already in the mood for fringe in the press photo above! The Countess Of Fife were inspired by The Cramps, so maybe they’ll be checking out The Heathen Apostles. Helmed by ex-Cramps bassist Chopper Franklin? Both acts are making real Country music [albeit from very different angles] that resonate with this Monk, who spent his youth watching Hee Haw and can tell the Country wheat from the chaff! You know the score for tickets.

JOHN OTWAY | EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL – Aug. 12
Finally, there’s hope for the festival with news that one more real artist is there fighting that uphill struggle for fame and recognition…John Otway! And his show is a free one so it’s worth many times more than what you’ll pay to see it – guaranteed!

So that’s all of the music performances at The Fringe that aren’t Folk, Jazz, Classical, or …tribute acts! And who pass the Monk’s rigorous standards for excellence. You’re welcome.

Post-Punk Monk 
I got to see John Otway live in London once, and it was one of the more entertaining performances I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The two best things I ever got to see in Edinburgh were a Neil Innes show called “More Jam Tomorrow” and a humorous revue called At Last The Death of Country Music, masterminded by Philip Pope (HeeBeeGeeBees / Spitting Image).

Big Mark – Aaaaaah! The glory of the HeeBeeGeeBees! So you’ve actually attended The Mother Of All Fringe Festivals… was it a whole month long then? That’s not a festival… that’s a lifestyle!

For the three years I attended the Fairport Convention festival, the tour ended with a few days in Edinburgh, and naturally, the Fringe is far more interesting than the “official” festival. It seemed that every possible space in town that could host a performance did! Something to suit every taste, including my taste in music and alternative/snarky comedy. There was SO MUCH to choose from!! All you could do is find whatever was most interesting at any given moment and get to it, and then repeat when that was over. I only had a few days each time, but what an amazing experience it was.

I was there 1990, 1991, & 1992, and I don’t know how long the whole thing was, but there was certainly plenty to fill the 3 days or so I had to fill on those occasions. Multiple weeks overall, certainly!
