  1. The Decayes: Aquarium – Imgrat – 0006 – US – CD – gift
  2. John Foxx + Louis Gordon: The Subterranean Omnidelic Exotour – Metamatic – META 0004CD – UK – CD – Discogs.com/$24.65
  3. Simple Minds: Blood Diamonds [John Foxx + The Maths remix] – Virgin – US – DL – iTunes/$1.29
  4. Adult.: Tonight, We Fall [John Foxx + The Maths remix] – Ghostly International – US – DL – $.99

It was almost all about John Foxx, this January. And I’m fine with that. But the first music across the Record Cell threshold in 2014 was an album by my friend’s band, The Decayes. I was delighted by the album and it was not what I was expecting to hear, given the experimental noise rock rep that the early Decayes albums have. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but this was a very melodious and beautiful album of instrumental songs that touched on West Coast Jazz and surf at times!

I saw the John Foxx and Louis Gordon numbered, limited edition live album in my Discogs feed one night and was incredulous at the asking price of £15!! This was released in 1998 in an edition of 500 and thought I was on top of the release it just didn’t happen for me. I never though I’d have a copy of this, but now, amazingly, I do! So there’s nothing to stop me getting a complete Foxx collection, in theory. The month was rounded out by a pair of remixes by John Foxx + The Maths of some other bands in the Record Cell. The Simple Minds remix is beautiful, but I have not yet heard the original version of the song, but how can I argue with Foxx mixing [and singing backup] with Simple Minds? Two great tastes that taste great together! I don;t have the new Adult. album yet, but it seems to be a melodic breakthrough from the formerly harrowing band. Shocking!

  1. Visage: Never Enough – Blitz Club – BZCR014 – UK – CD5 – Visage Webstore/$8.30
  2. John Foxx + Louis Gordon: The Pleasures of Electricity DLX RM – Edsel Records – EDSD2071 – UK – 2xCD – Amazon.com/$17.98
  3. John Foxx: In The Glow – Madrid 1983 – Metamatic – META46DVD – UK – DVD – Foxx Webstore/$11.08

A typical slim February with just three titles from the Ultravox Family Tree®. The Foxx titles were ordered once I discovered that the official store was low or out of stock, but the real prize here was the amazing Visage CD single for “Never Enough;” the best remix I’d heard in donkey’s years.

  2. DEVO: Oh No, It’s DEVO DLX RM – Infinite Zero – 9 43024-2 – US – CD – Mr. K’s/$7.95
  3. The Raspberries: Capitol Collector’s Series – Capitol Records – CDP 7 92126 2 – US – CD – Mr. K’s/$4.95

Another slow trickle for a March. What is it about the beginning of the year? It’s not like we have big Xmas bills to pay off or anything. Money’s just tight, I guess. It was nice to finally get a favorite Iggy Pop album on CD since I can’t play my LP in the car going to work. The DEVO DLX RM was OOP and bought on principle. It was nice to have it instead of the thrifty [but kind of annoying] Virgin UK twofers that were my previous go-to for this album. The Raspberries were not New Wave but they practically defined Power Pop in the 70s! Righteous!

  20. YACHT: Shangri-La – DFA – DFA2264 – US – CD – merch table/$15

Wow! Now that’s more like it! It’s amazing what winning an iTunes gift card for $50 will do, but for filling out a vendor survey from a provider I use at work my response got pulled from the month’s submissions and I was awarded an iTunes gift card. This proved the perfect way to get a lot of loose tracks and download-only material that I would normally be loathe to use money better spent for records and CDs! I managed to get a ton of Claudia Brücken loose tracks. I would not have enjoyed having all of those Blank + Jones albums, methinks, but surgical strikes on the Brücken tracks worked just fine, as did the three cuts she sang on the “L.A. Noire” videogame soundtrack [shudder]. I’d rather not have such a thing in my home, truth be told!

The post-modern Roxy Music remixes have long taunted me and although they’re wrong on the face of it, like any po-mo remixes, at least these don’t suck! The curator in me is happy to finally have these. OMD’s “Dresden” download had one more track than the CD single, now “in house” and the “Metroland” remixes were DL only, the rotters! Intense bang for [no] buck occurred when I finally got the Bryan Ferry “Olympia Remixes” package; a brobdingnangian assortment of 31 remixes of every track [some multiple times] from his last solo album. All but two of these are worthy, which is a hell of a great ratio for remixes, if you ask me. If you ever wanted to have the experience of listening to “Olympia” last nearly four hours, you could do a lot worse than what was served here! Even if I had paid cash for these, it would have been a bargain. It was also great to finally hear the Geordie folk song “The Lambton Worm” as sung by Ferry on a local history compilation that had long evaded my grasp in physical form. Savyy readers may know the song from the version of it [‘The D’ampton Worm’] used in Ken Russell’s “The Lair Of The White Worm” film of the late 80s that my friends and I made our own little cult film while it was in the theaters.

And finally, the last two entries came down to Moogfest fallout. After the moving experience of hearing “I Feel Love” at Giorgio Moroder’s panel discussion, I had to finally get the original 12″ mix as a DL since I’m not likely to want any other Donna Summer music. Seeing YACHT was a riveting experience, so I had to buy their last album at the merch table afterward!

  16. Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange Music From The OST – Warner Brothers Records – 2573-2 – US – CD – Lunchbox Records/$4.00

Eureka! This was a relatively heavy month of music purchases sparked by the fact that we trekked to Charlotte to see Eddie Izzard in performance after years of waiting for the tour to come within spitting distance. Lunchbox Records was filled with nice things that we went for. The first trip to Akron in a decade also had a mandatory visit to Time Traveler. The legendary Motors DLX RM was a must have since it is OOP and the Prefab Sprout album made me weep uncontrollably… even before listening, just by reading the lyrics to “Music Is A Princess!” So this was a feast after months of rationing. I’m always up for Kid Creole action. August Darnell is one talented and entertaining guy.

The big news were two of the very best albums released this year which immediately shot to the head of the class. The Eno•Hyde album was an instant classic to my ears and Eno’s best since “Wrong Way Up” for me. The Dieter Meier solo album was too long in coming and a real winning effort that I had been waiting years for after losing interest in Yello due to reduced Dieter in the mix.

I finally got the “new” David Bowie album after boycotting the early version which I knew would be superseded by a DLX ED. It sounded similar to the productions of “Heathen” and “Reality” that Tony Visconti also produced over a decade earlier, but the caliber of the songs on this package was clearly best of breed. In ten years Bowie had time to write only great material! Even the bonus disc was better than almost everything else he had done in the last 30 years [“Buddha Of Suburbia” excepting]!

I finally got the debut Scritti Politti album after decades. What’s wrong with me? Am I just cheap? The “Clockwork Orange” OST was another one too long in coming. It was good to catch up with Stephin Merritt nooks and crannies. Gary Numan’s track on the 6ths was incredible! He needs to do a whole album in this vein… but it’ll never happen!

  2. Johnny Cash: Personal Jesus – American Recordings – US – DL – iTunes/$1.29
  3. Billie Ray Martin: After All – Disco Activisto – DAREC1402 – US – DL – Bandcamp/$6.83

The Simple Minds DLX 2xCD/DVD signed, limited edition 3D book package was a must-buy for me since it documented the group about three weeks after I saw them in 2013 when they were red hot. It’s worth it just for the performance of “This Fear Of Gods,” which was one of the five songs excised from the running order for the non-limited, mass-market copy. What were they thinking? I had to buy the Johnny Cash download to write the Depeche Mode vs Johnny Cash Steel Cage Match post and thus complete my Johnny Cash Triptych®. The Billie Ray Martin DL was a fantastic early Bowie cover and yet another wonderful BRM addition to the Record Cell, albeit a virtual one. No physical on this release. As usual, I paid twice the artist’s asking price on Bandcamp.

  6. Róisín Murphy: Ruby Blue – Echo Records – ECHCD63 – UK – CD – Harvest Records/$1.00

2014’s Harvest Records Anniversary Sale was pretty slim pickings after a feast of unbelievable proportions the year previous. I normally wouldn’t buy any ROIR releases, but having seen Television live in 2013 and being blown away by the guitar work, I had to bite on that one. Moderat were a great addition to Moogfest 2014 and the Record Cell. I can’t believe I finally got the debut album by Oingo Boingo, but I was smart to wait. It’s got nothing on their sophomore album, which I have had for decades. Likewise for the “Urgh!” album. I’ve only wanted that since it was released in 1980! A late in the game Cocteau Twins single means that I think I only need “Violaine #2.” Finally, I remember liking Roisin Murphy’s Pulp cover on the “Bad Cover Version” CD-5 I have, so I opted for the “Ruby Blue” album. It took me concentrated efforts to warm up to it due to the singing right up front on track one being exactly not my cup of vocal tea. I didn’t immediately recycle it for some reason. I loved the cover paintings, and I’d be drawn back to the album only to be repelled by the first track. I eventually got past that tremulous vocal to begin appreciating a sophisticated dance album of considerable worth.

I don’t see prices like that at used cd stores around here!
I am curious as to your opinion on all of those Roxy Music/Ferry mixes that you bought. I have very carefully dipped my toes in that water and am suspicious of a lot of mixes post 1996. The few that I have bought were the reason that I haven’t bought more.

Thoughts on that new Prefab Sprout? The one before it really turned me off and this one I just find myself unable to lose myself in like I used to with PS product.

Ocean Blue – Cerulean for $2. What a deal on an underrated album. In my opinion their best album and I listen to this album more than a lot of music contemporary to it. Just a real gem. I hope it wasn’t a purchase of “one of my friends/commentators likes this so I should buy it” and it has sat unlistened to.

Tim – The $1 releases are from Harvest Record’s anniversary sale, where they open the basement to all comers at $1/per. CD or LP. If you want your mind blown, look at August 2013! Last year was insane! I loved the Prefab Sprout album, “Let’s Change The World With Music ” It was certainly on par with what I expect from them, even though it was only shelved demos. Bear in mind the last album I heard was “Andromeda Heights.” I was reading the booklet before hearing it and when I read the lyrics to “Music Is A Princess” I just lost it and ended up sobbing for a good 15 minutes as I contemplated what was being expressed. McAloon nailed it perfectly. I have not heard any other PS albums that followed it, but Echorich loved “Crimson/Red.”

I just noticed that I did not comment on “Cerulean.” I came to The Ocean Blue [as did everyone back then, I guess] on one of those great Sire “Just Say…” compilations in the late 80s where they introduced the band there. I was immediately taken with their introverted melodicism and bought their debut as soon as I saw it. And it ended there for long years. I always intended to buy “Cerulean” but it just never happened. I got “Beneath The Rhythm And Sound” about a dozen years or so ago [and liked it fine] and I finally acted on “Cerulean” last year.

Paddy’s album “I Trawl the Megahertz” is amazing. I am thrilled that I had the money and the OCD at the time it came out to buy it.

Love me that Sakamoto “Discord.” Best thing that he’s done in two decades IMNSHO.

I think he was listening to a bit of Gorecki around the time he did that one. it is sincerely the last Sakamoto disc that I have enjoyed. Used to buy pretty much automatically and stopped altogether a couple of years after that one.

tim – We buy everything we see [and there’s a lot…] since my wife discovered him in the Record Cell and really liked his stuff. I’m fine with everything I’ve heard, but “Neo Geo” is still my go-to album, after 30 years.

For me it is Neo Geo, the Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence soundtrack, Beauty, Sweet Revenge and Discord. I used to score my fix at my locally owned record store and there was a regular there who was obsessed with him. Like thank god there’s an ocean between Mr. Sakamoto and this gal stalker material fan.
