    Just….no. Part of his 80s nadir….

alonewithstrangers – Must respectfully disagree. I felt that this was the one palatable track between “Scary Monsters [and Supercreeps]” and “Tin Machine.” Well, apart from “Time Will Crawl.” One person’s nadir is another one’s zenith.

  3. “This is Not America” pairs nicely with “I’m Afraid of Americans” — and yet Bowie spent his final years in NYC.

(Also, “Time Will Crawl” is a great Bowie song — there I said it!)

  4. I have recently reevaluated Bowie’s 80s output and while it’s not as inventive as the 70s or “interesting” as the 90s I find enough there to not simply dismiss the decade. Interestingly, it took me a while for this particular track to grow on me.

postpostmoderndad – It immediately has currency for my ears. But it’s true. I largely dismiss the 80s for Bowie. I ignored him for a decade, Tin Machine notwithstanding. Even in 1993 I was terribly gun-shy for “Black Tie White Noise.” Which I felt was a fair album once I got a copy.

It actually is America, if anything defines this country it’s *never* being as exceptional as it thinks it is.
