Last week the big news was the long-awaited Blondie boxed set of god was finally announced for pre-0rder. But we’d just begun a dive into the Paul Haig box, then there was the death of Julee Cruise which couldn’t wait, so I thought it could wait a few days before discussing Blondie. “Against The Odds 1974-1982” is going to be a definitive look at the era where the band strode the earth like a colossus. Their journey from downtown NYC kitschmonger wiseguys to platinum New Wave godhead was indeed completely against the odds. The fetching singer would always be a draw, but without the goods that she and the band members brought to the songs, they would have only merited footnote status.
From the band’s earliest days, their re-appropriation of 60’s girl group/bubblegum pop moxie as nascent New Wave in the making meant that they were ground zero for a generation of hipsters. Long is the list of bands that might not exist but for their shining example of how to mix chemicals in the Pop Music laboratory to develop new strains of Pop’s DNA.
The project fell under the aegis of The Numero Group, and they have worked diligently for the various packages. A new name for me. This box will contain remastered editions of the band’s first six albums. The ones that cemented their status as major movers right up until the band’s wheels came off around the time of their last album before calling it a day in 1982. What’s in store for the various curated packages to come? Bonus tracks in red.

The discs com in a foil printed box with a 128 page hardcover book with extensive liner notes and band member commentary. Nice to see the Alan Betrock demos there and there is a surplus of materials from the band’s earliest days, which might be the stuff of the most interest to me. That debut album casts a very long shadow with me. Of the later albums, it’s always “Eat To The Beat” that tempts me astray. Often definitively.
Looking at that listing of 124 tracks, I’m shocked that I can see things in my Record Cell off the top of my head that I know are missing. Things like:

Tour choice of black or red vinyl for $50 more. But the LP boxes also have bigger books: 144 page hardcover instead of 128 pp. as in the CD Box. And there’s a second book with another 120 pp. book if an extreme discography dive with tons of luxe picture sleeve photos from around the world. Purrrrrrrrrr! There’s no way I could throw down $350-400 [plus shipping for this, but that second book is the kind of thing that’s like catnip to me.
Normally that’s as far as we go on BSOGs, but this time the best brains at The Numero group have done us a real service. If you’re a real [and old] fan who already has the first six Blondie albums [and you should], they’ve done us a favor by also compiling bundles of just the the 50+ bonus tracks into separate, discrete sets in LP and CD format! This sounds like a first to me… can anyone else remember this happening??! Lets all get behind this way of thinking to others will do this in the future. Steve Shafer – Right???!! It’s what everyone wishes so many times for but never happens…until now. That’s how to get my money. I have to say I’d not heard of The Numero Group before but they certainly have gotten my attention with this highly considerate approach. I will be joining any mailing list they might have so not to miss any moves going forward. One certainly can’t complain about the options they are offering.

Big Mark – I’m definitely interested in hearing all of the early material pre-Private Stock, but the Private Stock singles and Betrock demos are here too. I was not enough of a fan to bother with nth gen. bootlegs of this material, and now it’s in the best possible quality. What’s not to love?

Holy Xist, this is hands down the most stunning reversal of the Big Music paradigm I have ever witnessed. UNBUNDLING bonus material?!? Complete feature parity across all released formats?!?! I don’t have to buy ALL FOUR PACKAGES in order to get the complete set?!?!?
I can’t believe any businessman (or woman, thank you very much Ms Harry) signed off on such a MAD VENTURE, particularly in these cynical end-times. It’s almost as if… BMI and ASCAP were at the end of their ropes. And the big labels were folding like a house of cards. And the INMATES (nee Fans) were finally running the asylum….
We can only hope that The Numero Group understand the wild, world-altering paradigm shift they’re inciting, and are able to continue in this vein in future releases….
I can’t list the times I’ve refused on principal to buy something I otherwise would have pounced on, out of pure resentment for the money-grubbing “slightly different bonuses on each format”, “collectors are all just SUCKERS” mindset taken by … well, pretty much everyone else in The Industry.

The 8CD package is already sold out. I have some of the albums, and had planned on picking up the reissues with their sundry bonus material, then there was this announcement. I thought “Hey, maybe I can get the albums this time in one fell swoop.” Darn. Sold out. That was … disappointing. I am not going to spend $200 on the vinyl (I managed to pick up the Ramones Record Store day box, and THAT blew any cache I had built up) so I’m “stuck” getting the bonus material. Thank you to Numero for providing a package that fans can actually pick up. You might want to order yours before THAT is sold out as well.

I wonder how much of the soldout-edness of this is supply chain issues. It’s already been delayed a lot and I suspect they’re trying to get it out into your hands…..one way or another.
I have a ton of books on my wish list that are delayed again and again and again. Paper.
One of them is a history of Soviet era bootleg material that folks would record on anything, including x-rays. Now threatened for October. I think that they want a parallel release, physical and digital, Clearly the digital could have goine live last year if it had been released as expected but nowadays everything seems to be buggered up.

@postmoderndad, In any event I would strongly recommend buying just the bonus material, along with the Deluxe Collector’s Editions of the albums themselves – you’ll end up with significantly more music that way… For instance, the Parallel Lines DCE has four bonus tracks NOT available in this boxed set:
– Heart of Glass (7″ version)
– Sunday Girl (French Version)
– Hanging on the Telephone (Nosebleed Handbag remix)
– Fade Away and Radiate (108 BPM remix)
The other albums have similar extra material, so they’re highly recommended to buy separately…

Those first four Blondie albums are pretty solid material overall and loaded with immortal singles, so at first I thought to myself “I don’t have previous extended CD s of these albums, so I might just go for that $100 set” until I was reminded by the RAHB-i (Monk? RAHB-i? GET IT???) that the DCE versions aren’t sold out, so I concur that’s the way to go and buy the rarities set separately! Thanks! Bonus points for allowing me to skip the completely awful The Hunter entirely!

Oh, the much maligned Hunter album really isn’t half bad. I’ve found that with time I’ve had to reevaluate it from a tired labored jumble to something rather intriguing. And the highlights (for me – English Boys, Dragonfly, For Your Eyes Only, and Smokey Robinson cover) really only sound inferior to the band’s prior glories, but are lovely pop on their own. Your mileage (obviously) may vary!

Taffy – I bought it on release and it was part of the 1985 Great Vinyl Purge. Lived without “The Hunter” for 33 years! When I revisited, it was just as bad as I remembered. I’d even suppressed memories of songs like “Little Caesar!” But I’ll grant you “English Boys” was its high water mark.

Dave Turner – I was getting wildly variable results on availability on both the official Blondie store as well as the Numero Group store [which has significantly higher prices for everything]. The CD box was out then in stock in the time I wrote my post yesterday! But there should be lots of other outlets that people can investigate. Like ImportCDs.com have the CD box for $98! They are a great resource.

Blondie maniac here, slobbering in anticipation of holding these goodies in my hands. Preordered both vinyl and CD sets (vinyl will never be played, I’m strictly a CD guy, but wanted both books!!!) the day I heard the offer go live. Of COURSE I wish the box had everything – the 7″ and 12″ mixes, live stuff, etc etc. But rather than complain I’ll just empty my wallet and (not so) quietly await the August release date. And cross my fingers there isn’t a last minute delay.

I actually got one of the limited (to 500, i think) “platinum” collections – so presumably white or silver vinyl. I’ll be a very pretty doorstop! Seriously thrilled that ALL audio material is on the CD set too – I needed both books but on principle demand (but hardly ever receive) all music be available on whatever format one chooses. Don’t force me to buy vinyl (or worse, a damn cassette) when I dont need it.

I hear you on the multiformat marketing! The one time I didn’t mind buying the cassette was for Altered Imaged “Mascara Streakz!” I’d be churlish to naysay getting the CD, CD bonus EP and cassette – all autographed By Ms. Grogan for just $20!

i ONLY collect singles, and remixes from them.
i don’t have any of their albums, except for compilations.
now this, i’m glad to see that they are putting the rarities on
separate discs and vinyl. i’m good with that.
even if they didn’t, i would have still have bought it,
because thats what collectors do.
i doubt other companies will follow the lead, because
companies are there to make money.
and the whole point of special releases is to have material
to make you purchase it again.
am i enabling them. probably. but its about the music, and
what you are comfortable with in getting it.

Buy Parallel Lines and pretend it’s a Greatest Hits because every track on that album (bar the last one) would have been a massive hit if released as a single. It already contains 4 massive hits, namely ‘Hanging On The Telephone’, ‘Picture This’, ‘Sunday Girl’ and ‘Heart Of Glass’ and EVERY other track (bar the last) stands up with those in terms of quality. It’s an absolute work of genius (bar the last track!). 20,000,000 Blondie fans can’t be wrong!

Hugh Hall – I had to look and when I did, I saw “Just Go Away” and I have to say, I totally agree with you. There’s a reason why I don’t remember that song… But I still prefer “Eat To The Beat” head + shoulders to “Parallel Lines!” And yes… that includes “Victor.”
Especially “Victor!” Which should have been spelled with a “k” instead of a “c” if you ask me.

i just got the italian long disco version of ‘heart of glass’: 9:00min
I think its an official mix. but it hasn’t shown up on the boxset,
or anywhere else. so its hard to say.
its my favorite song from them, so i figured, why not
get it to check it out.
