There were many things I could have written about today, but the email in the personal device this morning took the pole position. Roxy Music are touring North America and the UK for their 50th anniversary this year. The last band standing of the high holy trinity of Post-Punk as we know it. David Bowie and Lou Reed are gone and Roxy is the other band whose DNA can be found in dozens, if not hundreds of groups in my Record Cell.
I’m actually surprised this is taking place since the band’s last hurrahs onstage were in 2011, in the UK and Europe. The last time they toured North America was in 2003! Though they performed at the 2019 Rock + Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony. I’ll guess that you weren’t invited either! I count myself lucky to have seen the 2001 tour on two of its stops [Camden, NJ and Atlanta, GA]. But select Canadian and US cities are getting the love this fall with a tour that has St. Vincent as the opening act [except for Boston]. Let’s see those dates right now!

Wow. Nine US dates. One in Canada, and three in the UK. We are fortunate this year. That might have everything to do with the band finally getting the RRHOF nod recently. Mr. Ferry is no slouch at playing in America, but the full Roxy mothership has been scantly sighted on these shores in the new millennium. And gloryoski, do mine eyes taunt me or does it look like Texas gets two shows! I’m just saying that they had better have “Prarie Rose” in that setlist.
To further mark the occasion, Roxy Music have a new website to herald the event with merch and full lyrics to their canon available for your perusal. Tickets go on sale at 9 AM in the UK on March 31st, and April 4th at 10 AM EST in North America.

The Maestro will be playing in San Francisco on what will be his 77th birthday. If you’ve never had the pleasure then act now! Supplies are limited! Of course Paul Thompson will be on the drum stool and I’m guessing some of the excellent pros that comprise Bryan Ferry’s band will be adding their chops. And if they don’t get Chris Spedding on 2nd guitar then I’ll have to do a spit take.

Roxy may be the big concert event of my 2022. I am still undecided- more to do with work, as I am now a training coach with monthly classes all year and less to do with Covid. In any event a ticket will be purchased on my behalf.

Golly jeepers, Roxy Music and Heaven 17 both in Chicago, three days apart. Whodathunkit. Let’s hope this plague cooperates. Pre-cringing at the sticker price for those Roxy tickets though. That’s gonna hurt. The fees alone will (literally) probably be more than the H17 tickets.

JT – But you can go to your grave saying “I saw ROXY MUSIC!” Personally, I’m not counting on the pandemic playing softball any time soon. Otherwise you’d probably have me and the Glam Rock Nun underfoot in Chicago for a few days.

Nonetheless, I just coughed up $446 for two 18th row, reasonably-centered floor tickets. ($195 each, plus $56 fees from TicketMobster… and I had to make an account on their web site – including my phone number – for their data mining and personal exploitation purposes). That freakin’ hurts.
Current plague forecasts indicate that forthcoming variants should continue to be equal to or milder than Omi. I haven’t been to a show since 2019, but I’m thinking a KN-95 will get me through this one.

JT – Well, I gotta say that as bad as you think that sounds, it hardly seems like the worst sort of TicketMobster reamout! The proliferation of toutbots and “dynamic pricing” [none dare call it self-scalping] had me expecting a LOT worse. And you’ve gotta up your mask game! KN95s went out last October! We rock N95s now. At work. And when I have to shop, there’s no mask more secure than the 3M Aura™ Particulate Respirator 9205+! You put it on and sure… go ahead. Wear it with glasses in 40 degree weather. There’s NO FOG happening due to the perfect, airtight fit around the nose due to the nose gasket and a design that channels exhalation down through the front filter. If vapor can’t get out, it can’t get in, either. I hate to be shilling for a 3M product, but these are THE BEST.

If it was ANY venue in Milwaukee that was, you know, a building designed for this sort of thing, I’d be signing up in a heartbeat.
I was so freaking thrilled when I saw the post on FB this morning and then gutted when I read the word Summerfest. YMMV and if the dates intersect with someone you like in Chicago, well. It’s the 1st time ABC has played Wisconsin since the Lexicon of Love tour.

Tim – Where do you see these dates? Any time I’ve ever gone to the ABC website, I always see a mere handful of dates for each “tour” in the UK and 1-2 dates in America, which I always wonder how it can be justified, financially? As usual, there’s no mention of anything in Wisconsin.
And “skonnies?” [waits a beat… oh, now I geddit.]

I was thinking of heading up to MWKE to see either Midge Ure or Cheap Trick at Summerfest. Last time I went to that was when I was working for Royal Crown Revue, and we were opening for BR-549, who canceled, so we got to headline. Anyway, I don’t recall it being particularly gruesome, but that was also like 20 years ago… and I was seeing it from the artist perspective. How bad is it these days?

Tim – Everyone should see Cheap trick! Saw them once myself during a not stellar phase of the band [“Woke Up With A Monster” tour] and it was still endearing, because…Cheap Trick! I looked at the roster. Mein Gott Im Himmel!! That’s an insane week of acts! 800s lb gorillas of Rock like Rod ‘The Mod” Stewart all the way down to indie bands I might have heard of! Surely, something for everybody? And…The Smithereens still exist??!!! How is that possible without DiNizio? I will say I didn’t recognize most of the “teal green” A-lister bands! But then, I’m ooooooold!

I’m sadly giving this a miss, aside from maybe Glasgow the UK venues are sterile and horrible. No thanks! Of course they may add a warm up of some sort, if it was Hammersmith Apollo then maybe… although I am concerned re whether Bryan’s voice is up to this. I love seeing him but have noticed the weakening of his voice over the last ten years and some of the material is pretty demanding stuff. Must admit I didn’t expect another tour. Was eternally lucky to have seen them play the 800 capacity Koko Club back sometime after the initial reformation tour, it’s hard to top that.

SimonH – Very good point re: Koko Club! Venues count in the overall scheme of things. Ferry’s voice has been losing power since the late 90s. Maybe all of those smokes? But he is making artistic decisions to exploit his increased vulnerability that fascinate me. How would Ferry ca. 2022 perform a number like “Do the Strand?” It might be fascinating to find out.

just got my ticket for Boston (despite the absence of the fab St Vincent). Gotta say, that “dynamic pricing,” or whatever the hell they call it, is just highway robbery. Still, I’ve only seen Ferry live once, and Roxy never, so this was a bucket list type thing.

Taffy – Dynamic Pricing? They used to call it scalping! But vertical integration of the event staging and ticket sales industries [we ain’t no Commies!] has seen to the perfections of Capitalism. At least until they can sell us oxygen itself! Why do you think Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are so eager to get us into space??!!
