Terrible news for me today. It was during lunch that I learned that Ron “The Man” Kane had died earlier this morning. I was all set to visit him for the last time tomorrow but it was not meant to be. The man was my sensei of record collecting. We’ll interrupt the thread to tell my tale of Ron Kane beginning tomorrow.

Shelf – Ron was like a gold medalist record collector, if there could be such a thing. I might be a big fish in a small pond, but Ron was semi-legendary in his scope.

Rob C – Thanks, fella. It’s been a very strange weekend for me. I thought I would be on a plane Friday night and that was a big shock that my difficult to achieve plans of visiting Ron were ultimately not going to happen.

“Sensei” is the very operative word here. Ron blazed some trails and frankly got a lot of his friends to explore New Zealand, Italian, French, and Japanese artists (among others) we would likely not have found out much about on our own. PPM will tell his tale, but I can think of only a half-dozen other people (the Monk being one of them) that have influenced my music discoveries anywhere near as much as Ron in terms of lasting influence. Among the others are Danny Beard of Wax n Facts/DB Recs, Peter Buck (yes, that one), and Don Gilliland of Murmur/Alobar records — the latter of which was also a key figure for the Monk.

chasinvictoria – And Danny Beard influenced Ron as well!! I have photos of Ron finally meeting him during your big birthday celebration. He was a big fan of what he released. Method Actors. Pylon. Love Tractor. I was lucky enough to have bought Ron some Method Actors material during one of our wild weekends in ATL in the early 90s.
