BSOG® Meltdown: Dead Or Alive Make Erasure Look Like Misers With 19 Disc Box!

doa-85

DOA in 1985 at the height of their fame

Yumpin’ Yimminy!! Just yesterday we were musing over the upcoming Erasure über DLX boxed set of god® which sported 12 CDs and a DVD, and just hours later, commenter tim alerted me to the boxed set that Dead Or Alive are releasing with Edsel Records that bests that puny effort by almost 50% more digital data! As released on October 28th, the truly awe-inspiring “Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI” set rounds up bind-bogglingly vast amounts of DOA music and video and dumps it on your head in a box which probably has enough heft to use as a weapon if necessary!

What does it entail? The simpler question might be what does it not include? I’ll leave that to the DOA completists to hash out. Nine albums, including many Japan-only albums never released in the UK are accounted for here with an almost equal amount of remixes and live material. Drink this salient fact in: there are a soul-crushing 34 mixes of “You Spin Me Round [Like A Record] to be heard here! That’s gotta be at least three CDs of material right there! Here are the full contents of the set below.

Gaaaaaahh!!! This thing hurts my mind. I have to admit that on the occasion of driving up to Atlanta on a lark and seeing Pete Burns perform at the famous “Masquerade” club, I went off my rocker and bought a few DOA CDs to listen to on the trip up. I have the following CDS:

  1. Sophisticated Boom Boom
  2. Youthquake
  3. Mad, Bad + Dangerous To Know
  4. Nude
  5. Nude: Re-Made, Re-Modelled
  6. Fan The Flame [part 1]

dead-or-alove-brandnewloverus12aThat’s probably at least twice as much DOA as I really need. I’d be happy with albums # 2,3, and 6 at most. “Sophisticated Boom Boom” has been in my discard pile for a year or two. I also bought US Epic 12″ singles in those horrible plain black sleeves of the singles from the first three albums when I saw them in the early 90s. Can’t say I ever listened to them, though. One I did buy new and listen to was the amazing “Dust Monkey’s Love Bubble” mix of “Brand New Lover” which was a favorite remix of 1986 by all means. The longer that song got, the more guitar was left in it and the more, the merrier, as far as I was concerned. The zesty solos in that song were most gratifying.

As with yesterday’s BSOG, the going rate for so much stuff is better than it could be. When a 5 CD, 2xLP + DVD version of “Stationtostation” cost, what was it originally? $200, then £118 [$157.46] for 19 discs averages out to a respectable $8.26/disc. They just announced this today, apparently, and the first 750 copies sold by Amazon UK get a signed print with each hefty box sold. Ordering info here, otherwise, for those so inclined.

I have to admit that these commercial boxes are beginning to shame me…make me feel less of a Monk. It’s been years since I have made a project of more than 2xCDs and the last two days are giving me the impetus to maybe dust off the long-abandoned Associates BSOG® which is probably the only prospective project I could do that might surpass the scope of these last two posts.

I agree with you on the albums one would want and throw in “Nude” which really distills the DoA formula for one grand slam before….well, I don’t really know the historical or biographical details of it all but from what little I’ve seen I suspect that a pretty big crash within the outfit started brewing after “Nude” was done. I collected them through “Fan the Flames” and then lost the plot.

don’t you worry Monk, box sets that are done well and without errors are few and far between – we know this from Simple Minds alone [ have you got NGD yet ??]. The Marc Almond box comes out around the same time so its a busy month for those wanting all of them. I’ve ordered this set already and i’m so hoping it will be put together well enough to warrant the cost even though i could do without ever listening to You Spin Me again – there is far more to DOA than that song !

nick – No, I don’t have “New Gold Dream” yet. I was waiting to hear the results and then again, my birthday cash would probably end up going for it. And FYI, my boxed sets at least have a typo. Nobody’s prefekt!

I think I’ll stay with my Sophisticated Boom Boom, Youthquake, Mad Bad And Dangerous To Now vinyl, Nude CD and spattering of vinyl remixes. I probably saw the same DOA tour you saw Monk, mine was at a fly by night gay lounge/club – lounge because it had lots of sofa’s and beds surrounding the dancefloor – where Pete Burns gave new meaning to giving it your all for a Track Show. I know I’ve seen them two other times, once prior in NYC and once in L.A. because I was there, they were playing and I wanted to get away from hanging out with the Paparazzi in front of Spagos for a night….
While most of the DOA catalogue can be set aside without being missed, there were some VERY 80s but still memorable remixes of the songs off of Mad Bad and Dangerous To Know that I can still listen to. Phil Harding and Zeus B. Held should be given props.

Echorich – Yup. That was the tour alright. Utterly amazing. Ask chasinvictoria, who went with me. Hopefully he’ll weigh in with his fond memories. I bought a cassette he was selling at merch called “Love, Pete.” I later got one fourth the cost of my Mac Pro when I sold it in 2005 on eBay!

I bit and preordered. There’s too much I want/don’t own to not make it an attractive birthday/holiday gift from me to me. Conversely, while I do love Erasure throughout their career, the only thing I *really* desire from their upcoming box is that DVD of the Wild tour.

Taffy – I had six of those albums so today I was listening to faves “Mad, Bad + Dangerous To Know” and “Fan The Flame [part 1].” That’s enough for me. If I only had “Youthquake” maybe it would have had enough pull, though the 34 versions of “Spin” would be serious buzzkill to me.

There’s a large interview with him on the Superdeluxeedition site today done a few weeks ago. He is very articulate in the interview and right off the bat says that the label approached him about it, that their people were gauging fan interest and it was something that the fans wanted and they felt that they could sell it so they made it.
He says that he was in the hospital for four weeks with kidney stones…..I know it was a heart attack that took him but as a person who has been done the kidney stone path, let me tell you that is some special pain. I would say it is all odd and unfortunate synchronicity.
If he is being honest in the interview about the label approaching him based on fan interest that part is quite interesting. The best of’s and SDE’s that are made are pretty random and what is included and what isn’t (I’m talking music here, not things like t-shirts and pins, don’t get me started on that) sometimes seems really random. This Dead or Alive box is a really bold move for a label, 19 discs, total everything but the kitchen sink approach…..it’s really bold considering how conservative the industry seems to be these days with releases. Like the new ABC album…..not one 12” single to support it. Can’t buy it domestically and Amazon doesn’t even sell it anymore as a MP3 yet ir charted quite respectfully in the UK.

I actually feel kind bad for folks who buy these SDEs becasue there’s a lot of them out there this year that actually like they were assembled with care. I’m sure most folks only have so many dollars in their music budget.

why would i buy dubs and edits and instrumentals ?

bonnie bianco – Welcome to the comments. Edits and instrumentals; I hear you. They only exist for completists, but if you’ve not given in to the pleasures of a good dub mix, then I think you’ve been missing out. While a good dub is hard to come by, when it hits the mark it can be a wonderful way to hear the music turned inside out. I was just listening to a dub mix of Icehouse’s great hit single “Electric Blue” and I daresay it’s now my favorite version of the song. All we are saying, is give Dub a chance!

Some of us out there use the instrumentals to make our own extended mixes, particularly after the labels seem to have forgotten how to make ’em around 1994/1995. I’ve made a bunch for acts like Pet Shop Boys, Swing Out Sister, Thomas Dolby, Tears for Fears, The Blue Nile, uhh, I did a version of Lou Rawls’ You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine that I’m really proud of. I could come up with a bunch more names of acts that I’ve done this with but I am sick as a dog right now and my brain isn’t working as well as I’d like it to.

Nah, if I don’t do SOMETHING I just think about how rotten I feel. I’m on what I call ”the biological restraining order” i.e. my doc told me to stay home from work for a week and have as little contact with people as possible. Today I have some energy so I’ve been working on the great reorganizing and retagging of the massive mp3 library. Couple years yet and all these suckers might be labeled correctly. If I only knew when I started ripping years ago…..

nick -So you ordered? And errors manifesting on a 19-disc set… imagine that! Can’t say I’m shocked. As one who occasionally ventures into 10-12 disc set territory, I can attest to the difficulty in making everything correctly. So I’m not going to throw any stones. I’ll only point out that I’m a hobbyist and Sony’s a multinational corporation…

i honestly panicked for a few moments, leafing through the book-like leaves then to the pocket at the back where the booklet is. Flipped though that and inside/under the pocket….oh no !!……Flipped back to the front where there is a folded page and bingo, its there ! I GOT IT ! I initially worried what i would do if its was missing, despite the sticker on the front saying it was included……the cds can be replaced, the print not so easy.

I read over at SDE that people are saying that it’s mastered from MP3? Huh? Anyone able to explain that? That’s right up there with Rhino doing poor vinyl rips of New Order tracks…

  12. Tim says:

Re the Marc Almond set, one can go to Amazon and cherry pick the tracks as MP3 purchases! I didn’t see ONE that said you had to buy the lot to get it. NOW, that’s the way to do it. A lot of people already have a lot of this and may not want to spend money on things that they already have and this sort of solution should be encouraged with SDE’s. A sale is a sale, right?

I actually have very few SDE sets, there’s just too much chrome and duplication a lot of the time to justify the cost. I never really got into them because I barely have space as it is & I’m trying to declutter the house, not increase the quantity of things coming in. I do wish that – not only with SDEs but CD releases in digital format in general – that the line notes etc could always be turned into pdfs. Some of us LIKE to know who plays what, who produced it, the lyrics, etc. I am really thrilled about how they handled the Marc Almond thing, up until today Marc was going to get exactly nothing from me for this project as I just can’t afford it. There are a bunch of tracks that I would like and due to this I’ll spend some money on it and it’s really about the music….

nick – Wow! That is a litany of production errors! A new record, I think. One to four errors seem to be the norm these days with no actual paid employees to make certain that the labels don’t goof up.

negative1ne – Too many…mixes…!! Blacking…out… I have to say, if I could press a button and eliminate all of the mixes done years after a song was originally released [Don’t press The Post-Modern Remix Eraser Button… you fool!] I’d probably do it in a heartbeat. It would be worth it not having so much clutter that I’d happily lose the handful or two of truly great Post-Modern remixes.
