Zero Hour! Rezillos Return To North America

Scotland's magnificent Rezillos finally made that much-ballyhooed sophomore album

Scotland’s magnificent Rezillos finally made that much-ballyhooed sophomore album… on their own good time!

Exactly one year ago today, I posted about the imminent new Rezillos album due out last year. Well, while I had tumbled down the Simple Minds rabbit hole, the world continued to spin. The new album, “Zero,” was released on March 9th of this year on Metropolis Records, and the band have already toured North America in May, but there’s more in the pipeline coming up. Two weeks ago, I finally ordered the [sold out at the label] new album on limited LP pressing. Yeah, I grouse about vinyl, but when it comes to this band, I really am ready to go the distance! I’ll take them on all formats for the rare “canonical collection” in the Record Cell. I’m still awaiting the LPs arrival, but I’m considering never opening it in a mad fit of psychosis. Sure, it comes with a download card, but I’m so hard core on the CD format, that I’m ready to order the CD now that the much more scarce LP is already a done deal. What’s on that new disc, anyway

The Rezillos: Zero US LP [2015]

  1. (Take Me To The) Groovy Room
  2. No 1 Boy
  3. Life’s A Bitch
  4. Tiny Boy From Outer Space
  5. You’re So Deep
  6. Animal
  7. She’s The Bad One
  8. Zero
  9. Sorry About Tomorrow
  10. Nearly Human
  11. Spike Heel Assassin
  12. Out Of This World

I had bought the DL of the digital single “No. 1 Boy” way back when in 2009 when it surfaced in the US iTunes store. To put that song in perspective, when I saw The Rezillos on their first American Tour… back in 2002, that was one of the tantalizing “new songs” that they played in their set. I waited seven years before I could buy a copy. Then, in 2011, the second new single, “Out Of This world” snuck out without me noticing for a few years! Both tracks are on the new album. Other changes that have happened since that fateful day in Washington D.C. when I actually saw a Rezillos concert were some lineup changes in the intervening [lucky] 13 years.

Core members Fay Fife, Eugene Reynolds, and Angel Patterson toured in 2002 with original guitarist Jo [Human League] Callis and Johnny Terminator, who replaced the unavailable William Mysterious on bass guitar. Since then, Jo Callis has bowed out to lay low [this is soon coming to an end, though!] several years back and Johnny Terminator must have gone back to the future. They have since seen their functions filled by Jim Brady on Guitar and Chris Agnew on bass. And they are not resting on their laurels. In fact, there’s a second leg of a US tour happening in just a few weeks:

Rezillos | US Tour – Second Leg

  • 08 July 2015 Washington, DC – Black Cat
  • 09 July 2015 Asbury Park, NJ – Wonder Bar
  • 10 July 2015 Philadelphia, PA – Kung Fu Necktie
  • 11 July 2015 NYC – Gramercy Theatre

Rezillos | UK 2015 Dates

  • 6 August – 9 August – Rebellion Festival 2015 – Blackpool Winter Gardens
  • 5 December – Brudenell Social Club, Leeds
  • 28 December – Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough

There will be more shows fitting in between these dates, but the notion of returning to The Black Cat to see them where I last saw them in 2002 is eerily similar to what happened with another Scot band I love. In fact, the last time I saw The Rezillos, Simple Minds were playing in the same city [Washington D.C.] the very next night! Watch this space for the review of “Zero” once I have a copy in hand to listen to.

  1. Oh man … how cool would THAT be, to see them again 13 years later! I may have to jigger the budget on this one …

  2. Addendum: though you have to wonder if the gig wouldn’t be even more amazing at a place called Kung Fu Necktie …
