As day follows night, thus does Gary Numan follow Ultravox, in my mind at least. Not coincidentally, I initially got into Numan in 1978 only to taper off in my fandom by the time I finally heard Ultravox in 1980. By 1982 I’d stopped buying Numan records altogether. After all, wasn’t he only a pale imitation of Ultravox? As long as Ultravox were delivering, I didn’t miss him, but after Midge Ure’s “The Gift” album in 1985, I thought, “maybe I should give Numan a try again.”
Good timing! At the point where Ure and Ultravox were crashing and burning big time, Numan was releasing some of my favorite music of his career [“The Fury” and “Strange Charm” albums, respectively]. In the fallow years of ’85 – ’95, there were no John Foxx releases and no Ultravox records either [that were worth anything, at any rate] so Numan stepped back into the synth rock pole position with some great work on his own label that was cheek by jowl with some of his worst [for I.R.S.].
So here we are in 2012, after having studied the latest steaming heap from Ultravox and just yesterday I received a notice from the official Gary Numan store at Townsend Records, that the limited edition 2xDVD I mentioned earlier is now on sale for a limited time only to one and all on the internet. Licensing issues required that Numan produce only 3000 copies for sale, and this was sold at his merch table on his just concluded “Machine Music” tour, so whatever unsold copies that exist are now sitting in the Townsend Records stockroom, but not for long! Numanoids unite! Act right now if you are entertaining the thought of having one of these in your media empire room. Sure, it’s a PAL disc. Just deal with it.

Too bad it’s AC:2 PAL; my NTSC AC:1 5.1 system can’t handle AC:2 discs, unfortunately.

another $30 for a ripping program once I update this Dino-Motorola Mac Desktop later this year will make it all worth while… and it came in just under $50 with shipping from London.

only for a few more months… Deciding between a desktop or retina macbook now… Part of the reason is that I have so many photo editing programs I’d prefer not to have to replace on this computer… And in the end I think I will probably still keep this old workhorse for some of that.

Well, I am currently on a 2008 iMac (running leopard) so I can still run Rosetta for all of the old, “paid for when I had more money software” that I may replace soon, but I will keep that warhorse for the occasional jaunt into Flash for some video graphics. Not to mention making DVDs! Steve Jobs alienated me when he saw disc free as the future of video.

Townsend Records is simply amazing! I ordered Music Machine on 6/22 and they shipped on 6/25 and I got it on 6/29!
Now to get it converted…

Echorich – I bought before I even posted, so you’re lucky. How do you convert? I do mine on my Mac. It goes through analog but still looks incredible and the conversion is flawless. Townsend is amazing, though.

I plan on converting it myself, not sure I can find a non intel program to do it though. May have to wait until the new mac is purchased.

Echorich – I use iMovie and iDVD together with a Canopus ADVC-55 Firewire analog to DV converter and a hacked DVD player [multistandard, region free, no Macrovision]. No “special programs” needed. I play the DVD in PAL into the ADVC-55, which is set to receive PAL analog to convert to PAL DV via a DIP switch. iMovie edits DV whether it’s PAL or NTSC. You pre-set set iDVD to output to PAL or NTSC before importing the iMovie file. Then process and save disc image for future burns. Viola. Sure, there’s an analog component, but the quality of the conversion is flawless. No dropped frames and perfect synch.
